Support SB 228: Disabled Veterans Tax Relief in North Carolina
A fair property tax exclusion based on a Veteran’s VA service-connected disability rating.

    What SB 228 Does

SB 228 would exclude from taxation a percentage of the appraised value of a disabled Veteran’s primary residence equal to the veteran’s VA disability rating. For example, a Veteran rated 50% disabled would receive a 50% exclusion; a Veteran rated 80% disabled would receive an 80% exclusion.

    Why this matters

North Carolina already recognizes that disabled Veterans deserve property tax relief. SB 228 updates that relief so it reflects the actual VA disability rating assigned to the Veteran.

    Key points:

    • Not every disabled Veteran is rated 100%.

    • A 50%, 70%, or 90% service-connected disability still affects a Veteran’s life, work, health, and finances.

    • Property values and property taxes have risen across North Carolina.

    • Veterans should not have to be totally disabled before the state recognizes their sacrifice.

    Current Status

SB 228 was filed March 4, 2025, passed first reading, and was referred to the Senate Rules and Operations Committee on March 5, 2025.

*Now we need North Carolina Senators to move this forward!

    What we're asking

North Carolina's disabled Veterans have earned the right to have their voices heard.

SB 228 would align property tax relief with the disability ratings already assigned by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. A Veteran who has been found by the VA to have a service-connected disability should not be overlooked simply because they are not rated 100% disabled.

Today, thousands of North Carolina Veterans live with service-connected disabilities that affect their health, employment, mobility, and financial security. Many are facing rising property values and increasing property tax bills while living on fixed incomes. Yet this legislation has remained in the Senate Rules Committee without a hearing.

We are not asking legislators to take a final position on the bill today. We are asking them to allow the legislative process to work. Disabled Veterans deserve the opportunity to have this proposal heard, debated, and considered on its merits.

    Take Action

Every call, email, and conversation matters. Legislators need to know that Veterans, their families, and their communities care about this issue. If enough voices speak up, SB 228 can move forward.
